Forbidden Zone Exclusive! Interview with Rise of the Planet of the Apes Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver
The Forbidden Zone was thrilled to have the opportunity to interview Rise of the Planet of the Apes screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. We talked to them just a few days after the movie opened at number one at the box office, exceeding expectations and getting great reviews.
We discussed how they got involved in the project, Scott Frank’s participation, the original series, how the script evolved, things we didn’t see in the movie, and more.
The new incarnation of “Planet of the Apes” is a direct result of screening partners and producers (and married couple), Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. The latter, a lifelong fan and expert on all things Planet of the Apes, suggested a reimagining of the story to Fox executive, Peter Kang, five years ago and he loved the idea. “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes” premiered August 11th, 2011 in theaters worldwide.
The duo, who share a deep passion for animals, wanted to write a cautionary tale about the abhorrent mistreatment of animals in our society- particularly those being used for medical experiments. They always envisioned that CGI technology would be implemented instead of real life chimpanzees.
Silver is the granddaughter of blacklisted screenwriter, Sidney Buchman, who wrote the classic films “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” and “Here Comes Mr. Jordan.” She is clearly continuing the family tradition.
